What age can a child start learning Linux?
The short answer
A child can start learning Linux from about age 10. They need to read comfortably and type, and they need no prior coding experience. Phil’s Cohort teaches children aged 10 to 16, starting from how a computer works before moving to the terminal.
Is there a minimum age for Linux?
No law or licence restricts Linux. The practical limit is reading and typing. Most children are ready from age 10, and many younger children enjoy it with an adult beside them.
What does a 10 year old learn first?
They begin with what a computer is, what an operating system does and how to give a computer instructions. The first commands are safe ones such as whoami, uptime and free.
Do they need to code?
No. Level 1 uses the terminal and builds confidence before programming. Python comes in Level 2.
